Palácio Nacional da Pena

Pena Palace or the Feather Palace was designed by the flamboyant King Ferdinan (1847) to resemble an operatic set with vibrant colours on all exterior walls.

It came as shock to the local citizens, who did know the original colours, when the palace was restored to its former opulence from its tired weathered grays. To read a tourist guide to the Pena Palace please click here.
