Sintra is 28km to the west of Lisbon and lies within the small Serra De Sintra hill range. Sintra contains three stunning palaces/castles while the town itself is busting with charming this has made Sintra rightfully a popular tourist day trip from Lisbon.
How to Travel to Sintra from Lisbon
Sintra and are Lisbon connected by a short train line that is operated by CP (the national train company) that provides a reliable and inexpensive service. This train line starts in central Lisbon at Rossio train station and terminates Sintra. Rossio train station is on the green metro line and is right in the center of historic Lisbon within walking distance of most central hotels.
The ticket price is a 3 zone ticket and a single cost 2.05€/1.05€ (adult/child) and the return costing twice the amount. The ticket is charged to the “Viva Viagem” bus/metro ticket and cost an additional €0.50 per ticket for passengers without one. The first train for the day is at 6:08 while the last train returns at 0:40. There is generally 4 services an hour with the train journey taking 30 minutes.
A joint tourist bus and train ticket can be purchased from Rossio train station that allows unlimited travel for one calendar day on the CP trains and Scotturb buses. These bus services include the Sintra tourist route (train station – Sintra town – Moorish castle - Pena Palace – train station) which is required by most visitors to Sintra and the bus services between Sintra to Cascais (Sintra - Colares - Cabo da Roca – Cascais) . The adult ticket price is 12€ but the Sintra Scotturb tourist bus is €7.75 on its own. How to Get to Sintra By Car
The drive to Sintra is very easy, follow the IC19 highway, west out of Lisbon, which ends at Sintra. The road can get very busy in rush hours as people commute into and out of Lisbon. There are bus services but due to the ease of the train are not worth considering.
